AirPods 2, 3, and 4 use a cylindrical stem cell glued into the bottom of each ear stem with permanent adhesive. The repair requires controlled heat to soften the adhesive, careful shell separation without cracking the plastic, cell removal, replacement cell installation with new adhesive, and shell re-seal. Done in a hurry without the right jig, the stem cracks and the AirPod is unusable. SPR runs a dedicated AirPods bench at our larger branches with the temperature-controlled fixtures and the right adhesive grade — that's why the work holds up to daily wear.
Pro 1 and Pro 2 use a flatter cell shape that lives behind the speaker module. The bench process is similar to stem cells but the shell geometry is different — opening the Pro requires a different tool and the cell ribbon connector is more delicate. Pro 2 with ANC has a different baseline current draw, so the replacement cell capacity is matched to the original; an under-spec cell gets you 60% of the playback time. We use matched-capacity cells and calibrate after install before handing back.
AirPods Max is the only over-ear model and gets a different repair list: driver-side audio dropouts (left or right speaker silent or distorted), Digital Crown stuck or unresponsive, ear-cup hinge wear, and the headband cable internal break. Driver replacement on Max requires careful disassembly of the magnetic ear cup; we keep the procedure standard across all branches that handle Max. Smaller branches refer Max to Kepong HQ.
One AirPod silent or quiet is the most common walk-in. It's not always a battery — about 30% of cases are just dust and earwax in the speaker grill that an ultrasonic clean restores in 30 minutes.
