Six MacBook screen symptoms

Different symptom. Different MacBook screen fix.

Not every cracked or dark MacBook display needs the same repair. These are the six symptoms we see most often at SPR — if any match yours, walk in for a free pixel test before assuming the worst.

Cracked glass, image still visible
Cracked glass, image still visibleTop glass layer is broken but the LCD underneath still shows the desktop and the touchpad still responds normally. On Intel Pro (2015–2019), glass-only replacement is possible. On every Apple Silicon Air or Pro the display is one bonded laminated assembly — full assembly replacement only.
2/6
Black screen, backlight visible
Black screen, backlight visibleTilt the lid in a dark room — you can see a faint glow. The LCD layer has failed but the backlight LEDs are still firing. This is an LCD assembly replacement, not a board issue.
3/6
Vertical or horizontal lines
Vertical or horizontal linesColoured lines crossing the screen after a drop, water exposure, or sudden firmware event. The driver IC is inside the panel and cannot be serviced separately — full display assembly replacement is the only fix. Apple-style 'stage light' or backlight cable damage on Pro 13/15-inch 2016–2018 (Flexgate) is sometimes a separate cable-only repair.
4/6
Dead pixels or colour bands
Dead pixels or colour bandsA patch of black pixels, a faint colour band, or a permanent ghost image where part of the panel has degraded. Apple's free pixel-replacement policy ended years ago for these models. Full display assembly is the only fix; sometimes worth living with if it's a small patch.
5/6
Touch fine, display dark or flickering
Touch fine, display dark or flickeringTrackpad and keyboard work normally; the screen is dim, dark, or flickers when you change angle. On Pro 13/15-inch 2016–2018, this is the classic Flexgate backlight cable failure — sometimes a cable-only fix. On Apple Silicon, it is more often an LCD panel fault inside the bonded assembly.
6/6
Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED zones not lighting
Liquid Retina XDR mini-LED zones not lightingSpecific to Pro 14-inch and 16-inch (M1 Pro/Max and newer). Patches of the screen stay dim while the rest is bright. The mini-LED backlight zones are failing — uncommon but increasing on 3-year-old units. Full Liquid Retina XDR assembly replacement; parts available at Kepong HQ.

MacBook screen replacement at SPR is full-assembly only on every Apple Silicon model — Liquid Retina LCD on Air M1/M2/M3/M4/M5, Liquid Retina XDR on Pro 14-inch and 16-inch M-chip generations. Display, digitizer, ambient-light sensor, camera and hinge mount all come together as one bonded assembly; True Tone calibration is preserved by transferring the original flex when possible. Intel-era Pro 13-inch and 15-inch (2015–2019) and Pro 16-inch (2019–2020) use older Retina IPS panels with separate glass-and-LCD layers — on these, glass-only repair is sometimes viable when the LCD still works. We run a free pixel test, backlight inspection and external-monitor check before any quote to determine which tier of repair is actually needed. WhatsApp us your MacBook's exact model (System Report → Hardware Overview shows the model identifier) and we confirm parts stock fast before you travel.

Display Repair · what it looks like
  • Cracked or shattered panel from a drop, or from something small left on the keyboard when the lid was closed.
  • Vertical lines, flickering, or a fully black screen while the MacBook is clearly still running — fans spin, sounds play, an external monitor works.
  • 'Stage-light' effect — uneven backlight or bright patches along the bottom of the screen, often worsening as the lid opens past a certain angle (Flexgate on 2016–2018 13-inch models).
  • Backlight dead — a very faint image is visible with a torch held at an angle, but there's no brightness; the panel works, the backlight circuit or flex doesn't.
  • Anti-reflective coating peeling or staining in patches (staingate) — cosmetic, but it spreads over time.
What we check first
  • Plug into an external monitor — if the external picture is perfect, the fault is the display assembly or its flex, not the logic board or GPU.
  • Identify the exact model (Apple menu > About This Mac) — Intel Retina, Apple-silicon Retina and Liquid Retina XDR panels are different parts.
  • Open and close the lid slowly and watch for backlight changes at specific angles — points to a Flexgate flex cable.
  • Shine a torch on a black screen to check for a faint image — separates a backlight fault from a dead panel.
Repair path

Workshop-level, usually around 24 hours. A MacBook display is a sealed lid — panel, glass, backlight, antennas, camera and the hinge flex are built into one assembly. For cracked panels, backlight failure or stage-light / Flexgate symptoms we replace the assembly, or on models where it's reliable the individual panel or backlight flex, then re-route the antenna and camera cables and calibrate brightness and True Tone where the model supports it. Flexgate on 2016–2018 13-inch MacBook Pros is a known design fault — the backlight flex cable is a fraction too short and frays as the lid opens and closes; fitting the revised part resolves it for good. Liquid Retina XDR (mini-LED) panels on the 14- and 16-inch Pro are higher-cost parts, and we source the correct one per model. We always test on an external monitor first, so you never pay for a display when the real fault is the logic board or GPU. Honest call: on older Intel MacBooks where a screen plus an ageing battery approach the value of the machine, we give you the cost-vs-replace comparison free before any work starts.

Questions

Before you walk in.

Q.01My MacBook screen is black but I can hear it running — is it the screen or the logic board?

The quickest test is an external monitor. If the external picture is perfect, the display assembly or its flex cable is at fault, not the logic board or GPU — the common and more affordable case. If the external is also blank, it points to the logic board or GPU and we diagnose at board level at our Kepong HQ. We run this test free before quoting.

Q.02What is the 'stage-light' effect / Flexgate, and can you fix it permanently?

It's a row of bright patches along the bottom of the screen, or a backlight that cuts out when the lid opens past a certain angle, on 2016–2018 13-inch MacBook Pros. The cause is a backlight flex cable that's slightly too short and frays with use. Fitting the revised display part fixes it permanently — it doesn't come back.

Q.03Can you replace just the panel, or only the whole display assembly?

It depends on the model and the fault. A MacBook lid is a bonded assembly, so for most cracks and for Liquid Retina XDR panels the reliable fix is the full assembly. On some Retina models we can replace the panel or backlight flex on its own, which costs less. We confirm which path your model and damage allow before quoting, and never push you to a full assembly when a flex will do.

Q.04Where can I get macbook display / screen repair near me in KL or Selangor?

SPR has 16 walk-in branches across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — Kepong, Uptown Damansara, Puchong Kenari, Sri Petaling, Taman Segar, Setapak, Mahkota Cheras, Pandan Indah, Ampang, Mid Valley, IOI City Mall, Sungai Wang, Maluri, Equine Park, Taipan USJ, and Kuchai Lama. Walk into any branch — no appointment needed — or WhatsApp us a photo of your MacBook first to confirm parts at the branch nearest you.

Q.05How long does macbook display / screen repair take?

Typically 24 hr at any of our 16 branches. Walk in without an appointment, or WhatsApp us your model to confirm stock first.

Q.06Which MacBook models are covered?

Every MacBook from 2015 onwards — MacBook Air M1/M2/M3, MacBook Pro 13/14/16 Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).

Q.07What does macbook display / screen repair cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the MacBook model and the parts tier you choose. We don't post fixed prices because every case is different. WhatsApp us a photo of the damage and the model and we send a free quote within minutes. No charge for diagnosis if you walk in.

Q.08Is SPR an Apple Authorised Service Provider?

No — SPR is independent. We're not Apple, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and we don't claim to be. We've been repairing Apple devices for 17 years across 16 branches in KL and Selangor. If you specifically want Apple-genuine parts and an Apple-issued service record, your only option is Apple's own out-of-warranty service. If you want fast same-day independent repair with a 6-month warranty at independent shop pricing, that's us.

Q.09What warranty do I get?

Every display repair at SPR comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour, honoured at all 16 branches across KL and Selangor — bring it to any SPR location for warranty work, not just the branch where the repair was done. Water-damage repairs carry a shorter warranty due to the unpredictable progression of corrosion.

Q.10What kind of replacement parts do you use?

OEM-grade parts as standard — manufactured to the same specifications as the originals. Premium-grade options are available on request for most models. We show you both tiers upfront so you can choose what fits. Apple does not sell parts to repair shops, so no independent shop in Malaysia can offer Apple-genuine parts; anyone claiming so is misleading.

Q.11Do you offer a free diagnosis?

Yes. Free diagnosis on walk-in at every branch. If we cannot repair your device, you pay nothing — no diagnostic fee, no consultation charge. Many fixes (lint cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, software-only) cost nothing if that's all that's needed.
