Six MacBook battery symptoms

When the cell is done. These signs say replace.

Apple recommends battery replacement when Maximum Capacity drops below 80% or Cycle Count exceeds 1,000. These are the lived-experience symptoms our SPR technicians see most often — if any match yours, walk in for a free check.

1
Maximum Capacity below 80%macOS Battery Health (System Report → Power) shows under 80%. The cell has lost meaningful capacity and Apple itself recommends replacement at this threshold. Common on 3-year-old M1 Air and M2 Air.
2/6
2
Cycle Count over 1,000Same System Report panel shows Cycle Count. Apple Silicon batteries are rated for 1,000 cycles to 80% retention. Past 1,000 you should expect runtime to drop further each month even if Maximum Capacity still reads above 80%.

3
Trackpad clicks feel mushy or stuckSwelling battery pushes up from below and presses the trackpad mechanism — the click feels pre-pressed all the time. This is the swelling-battery signal on every M-chip MacBook; ignore it and the swelling can crack the trackpad glass.
4/6
4
Random shutdowns at 20–40% remainingMacBook dies at 30%, 25%, sometimes 40% — especially under load (Final Cut, Photoshop, gaming). Voltage sag from a degraded cell drops below safe-shutdown threshold even when the percentage reading suggests otherwise.

5
Runtime collapsed to 1–2 hoursA MacBook Air that used to do 12+ hours now needs to be plugged in by lunch. Light workload (Safari + Mail + Slack) used to draw 4–6 hours of battery; now it's 1–2. Almost always a battery issue, occasionally a runaway-process software issue we rule out free.

MacBook gets hot while chargingAluminium chassis hot to the touch during charge with no heavy workload. Aging cells become less efficient at accepting charge and dump the excess as heat. Combined with swelling risk, this is a clear replace-now signal.

MacBook battery replacement at SPR is a 4-to-8-hour bench job on every Apple Silicon model — Air M1/M2/M3/M4/M5 and Pro 13/14/16-inch M-chip. The battery cell is adhesive-bonded to the top case and the trackpad flex runs underneath the cell; proper adhesive release is what takes the time, not the swap itself. Done wrong, the trackpad flex tears and you suddenly have two repairs instead of one. We carry OEM-grade lithium cells calibrated to each generation's charge profile, sealed with original-spec adhesive so the chassis remains rigid and IP-rating-grade where applicable. Every replacement starts with a free Cycle Count + Maximum Capacity reading from macOS (System Report → Power → Battery Information); we only recommend replacement when Cycle Count exceeds 1,000 or Maximum Capacity drops below 80 percent — the same thresholds Apple uses. Intel-era MacBook (2015–2019 Pro, 2018–2020 Air) batteries are different cells with different adhesive — same 4–8 hour bench process, slightly easier disassembly. WhatsApp us your MacBook's exact model identifier (Hardware Overview in System Report) for parts availability before you travel.

Battery Replacement · what it looks like
  • The battery menu shows 'Service Recommended' or 'Replace Now', or Battery Health condition is no longer 'Normal'.
  • Runtime has collapsed — a charge that used to last all day now lasts an hour or two, or it dies the moment you unplug.
  • The trackpad has stopped clicking properly, or the MacBook rocks on the desk — a swollen battery underneath is pushing the top case and trackpad up from inside.
  • A high cycle count for the model (visible in System Information > Power) combined with fast drain — the cell is simply worn out.
  • The MacBook runs hot, the fans ramp, or it shuts down under light load even at a healthy charge reading.
What we check first
  • Check Battery Health in System Settings > Battery (condition and 'Service Recommended'), and cycle count in System Information > Power — gives the cell's real state.
  • Press the trackpad in different spots — a trackpad that won't click is a classic sign of a swelling battery directly beneath it; stop using the MacBook if so.
  • Lay it on a flat desk and check for any rocking or a lifted keyboard / case — swelling shows as the chassis no longer sitting flat.
  • Identify the exact model (Apple menu > About This Mac) — Air vs Pro and Intel vs Apple-silicon batteries differ in size, adhesive and labour.
Repair path

Workshop-level, typically 4–8 hours and longer than a phone for a reason: on modern Retina MacBooks the battery is bonded into the top case with strong adhesive, right next to the trackpad and its flex cables, so the whole job is removing the old cells cleanly without damaging the trackpad, speakers or case. We disconnect the battery, soften the adhesive with controlled low-temp technique (never a heat gun that warps the case), lift the old cells, fit an original-capacity replacement and recalibrate. A swollen battery is handled the same way but treated as urgent and always brought in powered off — a swollen lithium pack is a fire risk and the swelling is already pushing your trackpad and case out of shape. On some Air and Pro models the battery comes as part of the top-case assembly; where a loose-cell replacement is reliable we do that instead, because it costs less. We test charge, runtime and the trackpad before returning it.

Questions

Before you walk in.

Q.01My MacBook trackpad has stopped clicking — what's that got to do with the battery?

On most MacBooks the battery sits directly under the trackpad. When the cells swell with age they push up from underneath and jam the trackpad so it can't click — it's one of the most common signs of a swollen battery. Stop using the MacBook, bring it in powered off, and a battery replacement restores the trackpad click in almost every case.

Q.02Is a swollen MacBook battery dangerous?

Yes — treat it as urgent. A swollen lithium battery is under internal pressure and can be a fire risk if punctured or if it keeps swelling, and it's already deforming your case, trackpad and sometimes the screen. Don't keep charging it, don't press the bulge, power the MacBook off and bring it in. We handle swollen packs carefully and safely.

Q.03How do I know my MacBook needs a new battery and not something else?

macOS tells you a lot: System Settings > Battery > Battery Health shows the condition and a 'Service Recommended' flag, and System Information > Power shows the cycle count. Short runtime plus a high cycle count or a 'Service Recommended' condition points to the cell. If the trackpad won't click or the case rocks, that's swelling. We confirm it all free during diagnosis before quoting.

Q.04Where can I get macbook battery replacement near me in KL or Selangor?

SPR has 16 walk-in branches across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — Kepong, Uptown Damansara, Puchong Kenari, Sri Petaling, Taman Segar, Setapak, Mahkota Cheras, Pandan Indah, Ampang, Mid Valley, IOI City Mall, Sungai Wang, Maluri, Equine Park, Taipan USJ, and Kuchai Lama. Walk into any branch — no appointment needed — or WhatsApp us a photo of your MacBook first to confirm parts at the branch nearest you.

Q.05How long does macbook battery replacement take?

Typically 4–8 hr at any of our 16 branches. Walk in without an appointment, or WhatsApp us your model to confirm stock first.

Q.06Which MacBook models are covered?

Every MacBook from 2015 onwards — MacBook Air M1/M2/M3, MacBook Pro 13/14/16 Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).

Q.07What does macbook battery replacement cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the MacBook model and the parts tier you choose. We don't post fixed prices because every case is different. WhatsApp us a photo of the damage and the model and we send a free quote within minutes. No charge for diagnosis if you walk in.

Q.08Is SPR an Apple Authorised Service Provider?

No — SPR is independent. We're not Apple, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and we don't claim to be. We've been repairing Apple devices for 17 years across 16 branches in KL and Selangor. If you specifically want Apple-genuine parts and an Apple-issued service record, your only option is Apple's own out-of-warranty service. If you want fast same-day independent repair with a 6-month warranty at independent shop pricing, that's us.

Q.09What warranty do I get?

Every battery replacement at SPR comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour, honoured at all 16 branches across KL and Selangor — bring it to any SPR location for warranty work, not just the branch where the repair was done. Water-damage repairs carry a shorter warranty due to the unpredictable progression of corrosion.

Q.10What kind of replacement parts do you use?

OEM-grade parts as standard — manufactured to the same specifications as the originals. Premium-grade options are available on request for most models. We show you both tiers upfront so you can choose what fits. Apple does not sell parts to repair shops, so no independent shop in Malaysia can offer Apple-genuine parts; anyone claiming so is misleading.

Q.11Do you offer a free diagnosis?

Yes. Free diagnosis on walk-in at every branch. If we cannot repair your device, you pay nothing — no diagnostic fee, no consultation charge. Many fixes (lint cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, software-only) cost nothing if that's all that's needed.
