Six MacBook keyboard symptoms

When a key won't behave. Six symptoms, six fixes.

Most "my keyboard is broken" cases are one of these six. Walk in for a free ultrasonic clean and key-by-key test before assuming a top-case replacement.

1
Sticky or unresponsive single keyOne key needs extra force to register, or doesn't register at all. Other keys fine. Usually dust or crumbs under the switch dome. Free ultrasonic clean at the bench resolves 60–70% of these.
2/6
2
Double-press registration (one tap = two letters)You type 'apple' but get 'aapple'. The switch contact has worn or there's debris bouncing the contact twice. On butterfly keyboards (2015–2019 Pro, 2018–2019 Air), this is the classic stuck-key issue — check Apple's Keyboard Service Program eligibility first.

3
Keycap loose or popped offThe plastic cap came off in your hand or rocks loosely. The retention clips on the underside of the cap or the scissor mechanism beneath it have broken. Most caps can be re-seated; broken clips require keycap-and-mechanism replacement (single-key fix, not a full top-case).
4/6
4
Liquid spill — keys salty / sugary / crunchyCoffee, juice, beer or carbonated drink went into the keyboard. The sticky residue glues the dome to the cap and the keys start crunching. Don't try to clean it yourself — the spill went through to the board too. SPR Kepong HQ runs the whole top case through ultrasonic immediately to stop corrosion.

5
Keyboard backlight dead under specific keysSome keys still light up at night, others don't. The keyboard backlight cable or the LED strip under that key zone has failed. On Apple Silicon Air and Pro, the backlight is part of the top-case bonded assembly — partial repair is not viable on these models, full top-case swap when warranted.

Several keys failed at onceThree or more keys dead simultaneously, often after a drop or liquid event. This is typically a keyboard flex cable failure rather than individual switches — the cable carries signals from multiple keys. Cable replacement on Intel Pro; full top-case on Apple Silicon.

MacBook keyboard repair at SPR starts with a free ultrasonic clean — many "dead key" cases are dust, food crumbs or dried liquid residue between the keycap and the switch dome. If cleaning resolves it, you pay nothing. If the switch itself has failed, the repair path depends on the keyboard generation. Magic Keyboard (Air 2020+, Pro 2019+) is a scissor-switch design integrated into the top case — individual key replacements are possible at branch level for most keys, full top-case swap for systemic failure. The butterfly keyboard (Pro 2015–2019, Air 2018–2019) was Apple's thinner mechanism; it had a documented stuck-key issue and Apple offered a free Keyboard Service Program for affected models. We check your serial number against the program first — if eligible, we send you to Apple before quoting our own work. Beyond eligibility, butterfly top-case replacement at SPR is full top-case + battery + trackpad as a bonded assembly. WhatsApp us your MacBook's exact model identifier (System Report → Hardware Overview) and we confirm parts and approach fast.

Keyboard Repair · what it looks like
  • Keys that stick, feel mushy, or don't register — common on the butterfly keyboards (2016–2019) where a speck of dust can disable a key.
  • Keys that repeat or 'double' — you press once and get two characters — another classic butterfly fault.
  • A cluster of dead keys, or the whole keyboard unresponsive, after a liquid spill.
  • A keycap, or the scissor mechanism under it, has come loose or fallen off.
  • Backlight working but no input, or input with no backlight — points to a keyboard flex or controller issue rather than the keys themselves.
What we check first
  • Note exactly which keys fail and how (sticky, dead, repeating) — patterns tell us dust vs flex vs spill.
  • Identify the model and year (Apple menu > About This Mac) — butterfly (2016–2019) and Magic Keyboard (2020+) are completely different repairs.
  • Recall any liquid near the keyboard — even a small spill changes the job from a key fix to a clean-and-corrosion check.
  • Test with an external USB / Bluetooth keyboard — if that works perfectly, it confirms the fault is the built-in keyboard, not macOS.
Repair path

4–24 hours depending on the model and cause. On scissor / Magic Keyboards (2020 and newer) we can often replace an individual keycap, scissor mechanism or the keyboard flex, which is quick and affordable. On butterfly keyboards (2016–2019) Apple built the keyboard into the top-case assembly, so a single reliably-dead key sometimes means a top-case or keyboard-assembly replacement — we always check whether a clean, a single-key fix or a flex repair will do first, because it's cheaper, and only move to the assembly when the fault genuinely needs it. Liquid-related keyboard failures are treated as a liquid job: we open it, check the board for corrosion and clean it, because a keyboard that died from a spill often has corrosion creeping toward the logic board that matters more than the keys. We test every key and the backlight before returning it. Honest note: butterfly top-case assemblies are a pricier part, so on an older MacBook we give you the cost-vs-replace picture free before you commit.

Questions

Before you walk in.

Q.01My MacBook keys are sticky or repeating themselves — is that the known butterfly keyboard fault?

Very likely, if it's a 2016–2019 model. The butterfly mechanism is sensitive to dust, and a single speck can make a key stick, go dead, or register twice. Sometimes a careful clean fixes it; sometimes the key or the keyboard assembly needs replacing. We diagnose which during a free check, and tell you the most affordable route that actually lasts.

Q.02A keycap fell off my MacBook — can you just put it back?

Often yes, if the scissor or butterfly mechanism underneath is intact — we refit the cap and clip. If the mechanism itself broke (common when a cap is yanked off), we replace the mechanism and cap. Bring the loose cap with you if you still have it. It's usually a quick, low-cost fix.

Q.03I spilled a drink and now keys don't work — is it just the keyboard?

Not necessarily, and that's why a spill is more than a keyboard job. Liquid that reaches under the keyboard can carry on to the logic board and corrode it over the following days, so we open it, clean any corrosion and check the board — fixing the keys without checking the board is how a spilled MacBook comes back dead later. Power it off, don't charge it, and bring it in quickly.

Q.04Where can I get macbook keyboard repair near me in KL or Selangor?

SPR has 16 walk-in branches across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — Kepong, Uptown Damansara, Puchong Kenari, Sri Petaling, Taman Segar, Setapak, Mahkota Cheras, Pandan Indah, Ampang, Mid Valley, IOI City Mall, Sungai Wang, Maluri, Equine Park, Taipan USJ, and Kuchai Lama. Walk into any branch — no appointment needed — or WhatsApp us a photo of your MacBook first to confirm parts at the branch nearest you.

Q.05How long does macbook keyboard repair take?

Typically 4–24 hr at any of our 16 branches. Walk in without an appointment, or WhatsApp us your model to confirm stock first.

Q.06Which MacBook models are covered?

Every MacBook from 2015 onwards — MacBook Air M1/M2/M3, MacBook Pro 13/14/16 Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).

Q.07What does macbook keyboard repair cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the MacBook model and the parts tier you choose. We don't post fixed prices because every case is different. WhatsApp us a photo of the damage and the model and we send a free quote within minutes. No charge for diagnosis if you walk in.

Q.08Is SPR an Apple Authorised Service Provider?

No — SPR is independent. We're not Apple, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and we don't claim to be. We've been repairing Apple devices for 17 years across 16 branches in KL and Selangor. If you specifically want Apple-genuine parts and an Apple-issued service record, your only option is Apple's own out-of-warranty service. If you want fast same-day independent repair with a 6-month warranty at independent shop pricing, that's us.

Q.09What warranty do I get?

Every keyboard repair at SPR comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour, honoured at all 16 branches across KL and Selangor — bring it to any SPR location for warranty work, not just the branch where the repair was done. Water-damage repairs carry a shorter warranty due to the unpredictable progression of corrosion.

Q.10What kind of replacement parts do you use?

OEM-grade parts as standard — manufactured to the same specifications as the originals. Premium-grade options are available on request for most models. We show you both tiers upfront so you can choose what fits. Apple does not sell parts to repair shops, so no independent shop in Malaysia can offer Apple-genuine parts; anyone claiming so is misleading.

Q.11Do you offer a free diagnosis?

Yes. Free diagnosis on walk-in at every branch. If we cannot repair your device, you pay nothing — no diagnostic fee, no consultation charge. Many fixes (lint cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, software-only) cost nothing if that's all that's needed.
