• 1The crown won't turn at all, or feels stuck and gritty — usually dried sweat, soap, sunscreen or sand packed into the ring around it.
• 2The crown turns but nothing scrolls on screen — the rotation encoder isn't registering input.
• 3The crown spins too freely with no clicky feedback, or the haptic 'detent' feel is gone (Series 6 and newer use a haptic crown).
• 4Pressing the crown doesn't register, or it's intermittent — a separate switch under the crown.
• 5ECG readings fail or won't start (Series 4+) — the crown doubles as an ECG electrode, so a damaged crown can break the ECG.

Counter-level, typically 1–2 hours, and we always try the cheapest fix first. A huge share of crown faults are just debris — dried sweat, soap, sunscreen or sand jammed into the tiny gap around the crown — so we start with an ultrasonic clean and re-lubrication, which restores a stuck or gritty crown in many cases at the lowest cost. If the crown still won't register rotation or press after cleaning, we replace the crown assembly and its flex, and on Series 6 and newer re-fit the haptic engine that gives the crown its clicky feel. The crown also acts as an ECG electrode on Series 4 and up, so we test ECG after any crown work. Apple Watch is delicate and tightly sealed, so the careful part is opening and re-sealing without disturbing the display or the gasket. We tell you straight after the clean whether a part is actually needed, so you're not paying for a flex when a clean would do.
