The back crystal is the sapphire or ceramic window bonded over the heart-rate, SpO2 and ECG sensor cluster, and that bond also forms part of the water seal — so a crack here does two things at once: it exposes the sensors, and it kills water resistance immediately. Most cases come from a drop landing back-first or sitting on the watch. SPR carefully lifts the cracked crystal, inspects the optical sensor array beneath it and replaces it only if the impact reached that far, then re-seals with fresh adhesive and pressure-tests where possible. If only the crystal cracked and the sensors are intact, it's a crystal-and-reseal job; if the sensor cluster is also damaged, we replace that too — we confirm which after opening it. Because the sensors are calibrated to your specific watch, we test heart rate, blood oxygen and wrist detection before returning it. Workshop-level, typically 2–4 hours. Sometimes only the crystal is broken and the sensors are fine, in which case it's a crystal-and-reseal repair; sometimes the sensor array needs replacing too. We confirm which after opening it and test all the sensors before returning the watch.
Usually worth repairing, especially on Series 6/7/8/9 and Ultra where the watch is far more valuable than a back-crystal repair. We'd advise against it for long. A cracked back crystal has lost its water resistance, so sweat and moisture now reach the sensors, and a sharp edge can press on or scratch your wrist. If the sensors still work you're not in immediate danger, but the longer you wear it the more likely corrosion sets in — bring it in sooner rather than later.
