Six logic-board failure symptoms

When it won't even start. Board-level diagnostics.

Some failures look like a board issue but aren't — battery, charger, display, or a stuck firmware reset can mimic the symptoms. SPR Kepong HQ runs the full free triage chain before quoting any board work.

No power, no charging LEDDead silent on every charger, no MagSafe LED, no fan spin. Could be PMIC (power management IC), tristar charge IC, USB-C front-end, or a blown protection fuse. Free diagnosis first — chargers and batteries are eliminated before board-level cost is quoted.

Apple logo, then black or restart loopBoots to Apple logo, hangs, then restarts. Or shuts off shortly after. This is often SSD controller, RAM (yes, soldered on Apple Silicon), or a critical voltage rail dropping under load. Recovery Mode boot test isolates between firmware and hardware.

3
Three beeps at bootAudible chime sequence indicates RAM failure. On Intel Pro 13/15-inch, this is replaceable RAM. On Apple Silicon, RAM is part of the SoC package — repair requires SoC-level work or board replacement; data may still be recoverable.

4
USB-C ports not workingOne or more USB-C ports stopped detecting accessories or charging. Caused by USB-C front-end IC failure or trace damage from a hot or bent cable. Single-port issues are often repairable at IC level; multi-port suggests deeper board damage.

Worked fine, then liquid spillLiquid event in the past — sometimes weeks ago — and now intermittent failures. Visible green-blue oxide on the board (under microscope) or sudden component failures unrelated to age. Ultrasonic cleaning + component replacement on lifted pads. Recovery rate 40–60% depending on how long corrosion has set in.

Worked fine, then random crashesRandom kernel panics, frozen screen, GPU artifacts mid-task. Often heat-induced BGA solder fatigue on intel-era Pro 15-inch (2015–2017 GPU failures) or M-chip thermal cycling stress on newer Pro. BGA reball at Kepong HQ; not all chips reball successfully — diagnosis first.

Logic board work on Apple Silicon MacBooks is one of the hardest repairs in the industry. The M-chip SoC integrates CPU, GPU, neural engine, memory and storage controllers into a single package soldered directly to the board — there are no slots and no socketed parts. When something fails at the silicon level, the options are: (1) replace the failed support chip (PMIC, SMC, charge controller, USB-C IC) via micro-soldering, (2) reball a BGA that lost solder connection from heat stress, (3) replace whole sections of board with donor logic boards on Intel-era Pro 13/15-inch. Apple does not offer board-level repair — official service replaces the whole logic board at a price near a new machine. SPR Kepong HQ runs a dedicated board-level lab with hot-air rework stations, BGA preheaters, microscope-assisted soldering, and a stock of donor boards for Intel Pro generations 2015–2020. Every job starts with a free diagnosis — we tell you honestly whether the board is repairable, whether it's worth repairing relative to the MacBook's market value, and whether data recovery alone makes more sense than full restoration.

Logic Board · what it looks like
  • Completely dead — no power, no fans, no charge light — even with a known-good charger and a new battery ruled out.
  • No display, no boot chime or fans spinning, but an external monitor is also blank — the fault is on the board, not the screen.
  • It died after a liquid spill or a drop, or after a power surge / wrong charger — classic board-level damage.
  • It powers on but shuts down in seconds, gets very hot in one spot, or trips your charger — a short drawing current on the board.
  • A no-charge that a new battery and a new charging port didn't fix — a charging IC or power rail on the board.
What we check first
  • Plug in an external monitor — if that's also blank, the fault is the board / GPU, not the display; if the external works, it's a display job, not the board.
  • Rule out the easy stuff first — a known-good charger, and whether a battery or charging-port repair was already tried and didn't fix it.
  • Note exactly what happened before it died — spill, drop, wrong charger, or nothing — it guides the board diagnosis.
  • Note if it gets hot in one area or trips the charger — a sign of a short we can localise on the board.
Repair path

Board-level micro-soldering at our Kepong HQ, typically 24–72 hours because it's diagnostic-heavy precision work, not a parts swap. We only reach the board after ruling out the battery, the charging port and (via an external monitor) the display, so you're not paying for board work when a cheaper repair would do. Under a microscope we measure current draw to localise the fault — a shorted capacitor, a failed power-management or charging IC, a damaged power rail, or corrosion from a spill — and micro-solder the repair. On Apple-silicon MacBooks we can reball or replace the relevant components where viable. Liquid and impact boards get an ultrasonic clean and corrosion removal first. Honest up front: board-level repair is the most complex thing we do and the one we can't promise sight-unseen — some faults are economical to fix, some aren't, and on soldered-storage models data recovery means getting the board stable enough to boot once. We diagnose free, tell you whether it's worth it versus the machine's value, and if the data is the priority we approach it with that goal first.

Questions

Before you walk in.

Q.01How do I know my MacBook needs a logic-board repair and not just a battery or screen?

We rule those out first, and you can pre-check one yourself: plug in an external monitor. If the external screen works, your fault is the display, not the board. If it's also blank, or the MacBook won't power on at all with a known-good charger and the battery's been ruled out, it points to the board. We confirm with board-level diagnosis, free, before any board work — so you never pay for a board repair when a battery or screen was the real issue.

Q.02Is a logic-board repair worth it, or should I replace the MacBook?

It depends on the fault and the machine. Some board faults — a single shorted component or a charging IC — are economical to fix and far cheaper than a new MacBook. Others, on an older machine, aren't worth it. Because it's our most complex repair and we can't promise the outcome sight-unseen, we diagnose free, tell you honestly whether it's worth repairing versus the machine's value, and let you decide with real information.

Q.03My MacBook is dead — can you recover my data even if you can't fix the board?

Often yes. On Intel MacBooks with a removable SSD we can usually read the data even if the board isn't worth repairing. On Apple-silicon and recent Intel models the storage is soldered to the board, so recovery means stabilising the board enough to boot once and pull the data — which we attempt at board level. Tell us upfront that the data matters most and we prioritise that over a cosmetic repair.

Q.04Where can I get macbook logic board repair near me in KL or Selangor?

SPR has 16 walk-in branches across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor — Kepong, Uptown Damansara, Puchong Kenari, Sri Petaling, Taman Segar, Setapak, Mahkota Cheras, Pandan Indah, Ampang, Mid Valley, IOI City Mall, Sungai Wang, Maluri, Equine Park, Taipan USJ, and Kuchai Lama. Walk into any branch — no appointment needed — or WhatsApp us a photo of your MacBook first to confirm parts at the branch nearest you.

Q.05How long does macbook logic board repair take?

Typically 24–72 hr at any of our 16 branches. Walk in without an appointment, or WhatsApp us your model to confirm stock first.

Q.06Which MacBook models are covered?

Every MacBook from 2015 onwards — MacBook Air M1/M2/M3, MacBook Pro 13/14/16 Intel and Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4).

Q.07What does macbook logic board repair cost in Malaysia?

Cost depends on the MacBook model and the parts tier you choose. We don't post fixed prices because every case is different. WhatsApp us a photo of the damage and the model and we send a free quote within minutes. No charge for diagnosis if you walk in.

Q.08Is SPR an Apple Authorised Service Provider?

No — SPR is independent. We're not Apple, not an Apple Authorised Service Provider, and we don't claim to be. We've been repairing Apple devices for 17 years across 16 branches in KL and Selangor. If you specifically want Apple-genuine parts and an Apple-issued service record, your only option is Apple's own out-of-warranty service. If you want fast same-day independent repair with a 6-month warranty at independent shop pricing, that's us.

Q.09What warranty do I get?

Every logic board at SPR comes with a 6-month warranty on parts and labour, honoured at all 16 branches across KL and Selangor — bring it to any SPR location for warranty work, not just the branch where the repair was done. Water-damage repairs carry a shorter warranty due to the unpredictable progression of corrosion.

Q.10What kind of replacement parts do you use?

OEM-grade parts as standard — manufactured to the same specifications as the originals. Premium-grade options are available on request for most models. We show you both tiers upfront so you can choose what fits. Apple does not sell parts to repair shops, so no independent shop in Malaysia can offer Apple-genuine parts; anyone claiming so is misleading.

Q.11Do you offer a free diagnosis?

Yes. Free diagnosis on walk-in at every branch. If we cannot repair your device, you pay nothing — no diagnostic fee, no consultation charge. Many fixes (lint cleaning, ultrasonic cleaning, software-only) cost nothing if that's all that's needed.
