What we check first
  • Force-close the Camera app and restart the iPad — rules out a software freeze before any hardware work.
  • Check both front and rear cameras, and note which fails — they're separate modules.
  • Look for a cracked lens cover over the rear camera — that's a cheaper glass-only fix, separate from the camera module.
  • Note whether it followed a drop — impact damages the camera flex, and on Pro the Face ID array nearby.
Repair path

Counter-level, typically 1–2 hours. First we rule out software with a restart, since a frozen or 'camera unavailable' preview is sometimes just that. If the rear lens cover glass is cracked but the camera works, that's a glass-only replacement at lower cost — it's a separate part from the camera module. For a genuinely faulty front or rear camera (blurry, won't focus, black, OIS failure) we replace the affected module and test focus, stabilisation and the flash. On iPad Pro the front camera array also drives Face ID and Center Stage, so we test those after any front-camera work, and impact near it can affect neighbouring flexes which we check. We always separate a cracked lens cover (cheap) from a failed module (more) and a software glitch (free fix) first, so you pay only for what's actually needed. The diagnosis is free.

└─ Usually not. The lens cover glass is a separate part that sits over the camera module, so if your photos are still sharp, it's often a glass-only replacement — cheaper than a full camera. We confirm the module underneath is undamaged first; left cracked, the exposed lens collects dust and moisture, so it's worth replacing before that affects image quality.
Q.02My iPad camera shows a black screen or 'camera unavailable' — is it broken?[+]
└─ Not always. A black preview or 'camera unavailable' error is sometimes a software freeze that a restart or update clears, so we try that first — it's free. If it persists, the camera module or its flex cable has failed and needs replacing. We diagnose which before quoting so you don't pay for hardware when a restart was the fix.
