Battery drains too fast

30 – 60 min

Phone barely lasts a day, drops 20–40% on standby overnight, or shuts down at 30–40% remaining. Lithium-ion cells degrade after about 18–30 months of daily use; once the chemistry passes the wear cliff, no software fix brings it back.

Battery cell only — original glass, screen, and motherboard preserved.
Common on
iPhone after the second year, Samsung Galaxy after the third year, Android phones used heavily on the road or for navigation / video.
Notes
We always check battery health first (iPhone: Settings → Battery → Battery Health; Android: third-party tool). Replacement is only worthwhile when the cell is genuinely worn — we tell you upfront if your phone's pattern points to a software issue instead.

Swollen / bulging battery

1 – 2 hr

The back of the phone feels raised, the screen has lifted off the frame slightly, or the screen is being pushed outward from inside. A swollen lithium cell is unsafe — risk of rupture or thermal event escalates daily.

What we replace
Battery cell — usually with replacement of the rear adhesive seal and any damaged frame components.
Common on
Phones older than 3 years, especially after extended use in hot car cabins, or phones left charging long-term in cases that trap heat.
Notes
Treat as urgent. Don't continue charging the phone, don't leave it in a hot car, and bring it in same-day if you can. Free in-branch triage for swollen-battery devices.

Phone shuts off at 30–50%

30 – 60 min

Phone reads 30–50% remaining then suddenly powers off — usually only when the screen is bright, you open the camera, or the day is hot. The battery's voltage curve has collapsed; the gauge reading no longer matches the cell's actual state.

What we replace
Battery cell only.
Common on
iPhone running iOS 14+ throttling, Samsung Galaxy S series after the second year, OnePlus / Xiaomi flagship phones with high screen brightness.
Notes
Apple's iOS Battery Health screen will usually flag this with a 'Service' or 'Significantly degraded' message. Android phones don't expose this clearly — bring it in for a free check.

Battery won't charge / charges slowly

1 – 2 hr

Plugged in but the battery icon doesn't move, or charges only when the cable sits at a specific angle, or stops charging at 80%. Could be the battery cell, the charging port flex, the lightning / USB-C connector, or the power IC on the motherboard — different fixes.

What we replace
Charging port flex first (cheapest and most common), then battery cell, then board-level work as last resort.
Common on
iPhone Lightning ports clogged with pocket lint; Android USB-C ports with bent inner pins; phones used overnight on cheap fast-chargers.
Notes

Phone overheats during charging or use

1 – 3 hr

Phone runs hot to the touch when charging, or during normal use, or in standby. May be a degraded battery's internal resistance, a stuck app eating CPU, or a damaged charging IC. Heat shortens cell life, so worth diagnosing before more damage is done.

Common on

What's the difference between original, Service Pack, and OEM-grade aftermarket batteries?+
Service Pack = manufacturer's authorised replacement battery (identical to factory spec). Original-quality = same factory's OEM battery sold to repair shops. OEM-grade aftermarket = third-party manufacturer batteries matched to original capacity, slightly lower price, full 6-month warranty. We carry all three for major iPhone and Samsung models and explain the trade-offs before you choose.
My iPhone shows the "Important Battery Message" — what does that mean?+
That's iOS flagging a battery that wasn't installed by Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. It does not mean the battery is unsafe or that the phone won't work — it means Battery Health stops showing detailed Maximum Capacity. The phone still functions normally and the battery still has full capacity at install. The message is permanent on non-Apple-channel batteries; it can't be removed.
Will replacing the battery void my warranty?+
If your phone is still under manufacturer warranty (typically the first year), a non-manufacturer battery replacement may void it. Most customers come to SPR for battery replacement after manufacturer warranty has expired, so this rarely applies. We always ask about warranty status before any work and tell you the trade-offs.
My battery is swollen / pushing the screen out — is it dangerous?+
Yes — a swollen lithium-ion cell is unsafe and the risk increases the longer it's left. Don't continue charging the phone, don't leave it in a hot car, don't apply pressure to the screen. Bring it in same-day if you can — we triage swollen-battery cases urgently and replace the cell plus any damaged frame components. Free in-branch diagnosis on swollen batteries.
